Brushstrokes finally “becomes legal” and turns 21 years old today. The store is “coming of age” with a very special 21% off coupon, a contribution to the buyer’s choice of three gay-oriented charities and a cake celebration with store staffers.
With a coupon-ad in DAVID magazine, the Georgia Voice newspaper and Brushstrokes’ site online, customer may receive a 21% discount on most items in both stores, valid from December 1 to December 5.

Brushstrokes was voted “Best Gift Shop” in Georgia Voice’s “Best of Atlanta 2010” survey and placed in the Best Bookstore category and was runner-up in “Best Gay-Themed Store” in Creative Loafing’s 2010 survey.
Brushstrokes, one of the Top 5 largest gay-owned and gay-operated retail businesses in the nation, stocks more than 40,000 items including T-shirts, underwear, greeting cards, dance music, DVDs and gifts in two Atlanta stores. Brushstrokes Pleasures, its adult store, sells and rents DVDs, magazines and books. It has a large web-based delivery-by-post site.
“We began this store in a tiny hallway space on Highland Avenue on December 1, 1989; have expanded and moved it three times, and now occupy 4,500 square feet of retail space in two stores in Atlanta’s Ansley Square mall,” said Mark Jackson and Tom Schloeder, co-owners of Brushstrokes.
“We have grown in several ways every year and now have the largest and most diverse selection of merchandise we’ve ever sold. We think the secret of our success is to quickly adapt to our customers and the marketplace. Who would have thought five years ago that underwear would be one of our bigger sales lines? But today it is,” said Jackson and Schloeder.
Additionally, Brushstrokes will donate a portion of its sales from December 1 through December 31, 2010, to three charities:
- Atlanta Pride Celebration 2011
- Jerusalem House, which provides housing for homeless and low-income individuals and families living with HIV/AIDS
- P.A.L.S., which provides pet care, free food and veterinary care to senior citizens as well as critically ill and disabled Atlantans.
Store customers may select which charity by simply bringing the coupon-ad, or a copy of it, into the store and selecting which charity he or she would like to benefit with any purchase.
